Redondo Beach, Los Angeles County
In 1907 railroad magnate Henry Huntington brought Hawaiian surfer George Freeth to Redondo Beach to draw crowds to his new seaside resort. Freeth rode the waves daily and later trained the first lifeguard crews in Southern California. A bronze bust near the pier honors him. The horseshoe-shaped pier itself is the latest of several built here since 1889.
